Module 6 Assignment:
Paraprofessional (paraeducator) Collaboration Plan

Directions
In this assignment, you will construct a paraprofessional (paraeducator) collaboration
plan based on three activities that determines the best traits and skills for the position,
along with determining proper communication and work distribution.

Part I
Imagine that your current paraprofessional is moving away to another state. You have
just been informed that a new paraprofessional will be hired during summer vacation.
The administrator has asked you to list 10 traits or skills that you feel are the most
important for the paraprofessional to have in order to be effective in your program. List
each trait or skill and the rationale for why it is important. Do not feel limited to type just
one line into the chart. It will expand with your information.

Complete the chart below. List the 10 traits or skills that you feel are the most important
for the paraprofessional to have in order to be effective in your classroom setting, then
provide a rationale for each skill/trait provided.

Skill/Trait Rationale

Part II
Imagine that it is the first day of school for all staff and faculty (the students will arrive in
two days). You have just met the newly hired Para educator who is to assist you.

● What would you do to ensure the newly hired Para educator will feel comfortable
in his/her new job and school?

● What would you do to ensure that you and the Para educator develop a strong
and positive working relationship right from the beginning?

● What would you do to ensure that the Para educator understands the scope of
his/her responsibilities?

*Include a minimum of 3 ideas for EACH question.

Part III
Think about your particular classroom setting. Briefly describe your class (ex: resource,
self-contained, integrated, etc.). Write a job description for a Para educator who would
be working in your classroom all day. Describe the tasks that the para would be
expected to do throughout the day and throughout the year. The job description should
give the reader a clear understanding of what the roles and responsibilities of the Para
educator would perform in your particular class.
If you are not currently working in a classroom, select one of the settings mentioned
above and describes what you would have the para do. Also, include answers (in
paragraph form) to these questions:

● What is your plan for communicating general daily responsibilities expected of
the para?

● What is your plan for communicating on a daily basis with your para? (Ex: You
are in and out of the room all day and can’t always be there to give direction or
have conversations.)

● How will you include your para in daily lesson planning?
● How will you ensure that your para and the general education teachers that have

your students mainstreamed in their classes will have a positive collaborative
experience?

● If you were able to select the topics for paraprofessional training or

professional

development, provide a minimum of three topics that you would want your
paraprofessional to receive training in.

Write your answers in paragraph form.
