We cannot fully understand the social problems in our society unless we witness the impact they have on individuals. While we ourselves are affected in many way by numerous social problems, this assignment invites you to learn about the way somebody you know is affected by discrimination.
Interview a member of a minority in the American Society. In accordance with Helen Mayer Hacker, through “minority” we understand “people who are discriminated against on the basis of physical or cultural characteristics, regardless of their numbers”. Examples of minority groups are women, racial and ethnic groups (all except whites), LGBTQ, people with disabilities, the elderly, marginalized cliques in high school (such as the nerds or the emos), single parents, stay at home dads, etc.
When preparing for the interview, you should think – and make a list – of very diverse questions regarding the interviewee’s culture. You should inquire, for example (but don’t limit your interview to this topic) about the interviewee’s family structure when they were children, their social position, their musical tastes, culinary preferences, etc.
1. Briefly describe the background of the individual you interview. If you wish, you may protect the interviewee’s privacy by not disclosing their name or other details which can identify them. (40 point) (Your submission will not count or be accepted without this information.)
2. What are some cultural features you share with the interviewee? (120 points) (200-300 words)
3. What are some cultural differences between the interviewee and yourself? (120 points) (200-330 words)
4. What are some challenges faced by the interviewee because of their minority status? (120 points) (200-300 words)
Place an order in 3 easy steps. Takes less than 5 mins.
