For class assignment #1, you will research and provide additional

information (power point) about academic programs and departments in

Ethnic Studies at various institutions around the U.S. A written reflection

(Minimum 3 pg., double- spaced) is required as well as a powerpoint

summarizing and comparing your findings. Each student will email

Professor Garcia their 3 choices no later than 12 Noon February 23. Below

are additional instructions.

Fordham University

University of North Carolina at Charlotte

American University

1. Find two, no more than three Ethnic Studies Programs or

Departments from throughout the U.S. Do not use more than one

from any given state. In your work cited section, you must provide

the URL for each program/department.

2. What year was the department/program founded? Does the date

have any significance?

3. Examine the program/department website for its mission, values,

vision and purpose. Do they align with what we have been learning in

class?

4. Does the program/department offer a

certificate/minor/major/graduate degree? If so, provide a couple of

sentences discussing these findings.

5. Explore course offerings. What type of classes do they offer? Are

they similar or different? Provide 2-3 examples to compare and

contrast.

6. How big is the program/department? How many faculty and

students?

7. Does anything stand out regarding your choices?

8. Remember, some programs/departments go by different names…i.e.

American Ethnic Studies, American Culture Studies, etc.

9. You are gathering this information so you become very familiar with

the structure of Ethnic Studies in order to compose an articulate and

well-grounded letter for Class Assignment #2.
