Ask students to reflect on how this ruling changed American society. What other civil rights
issues affect LGBTQ people?
2. According to the book, one in four LGBTQ employees have experienced discrimination in the
workforce during the past five years. What protections are needed to prevent this? How might
this discrimination affect a person’s life?
3. Ask students to summarize the way that functionalists, conflict theorists, and interactionists
view heterosexuality and homosexuality. How do our social institutions support heterosexual
families?
